Autumn golf on the Costa del Sol
Weather and daylight on the Costa del Sol from September to November, and the 2026 visitor rules at Finca Cortesín, Valderrama and La Reserva.
Late September to November is one of the main golf seasons on the Costa del Sol. The August heat has eased, the afternoons are comfortable again, and there is still enough daylight for a full round after lunch until the clocks go back in late October.
September to November
At Málaga airport, Spain's weather agency records average highs of 28°C in September, 24°C in October and 20°C in November. Rain comes more often as the season goes on, from about two days in September to five or six in November.
October sits in the middle: warm enough for golf all day, with about seven hours of sun a day. Spain's national holiday falls on Monday 12 October in 2026, and the Costa del Sol tourism board says many of the coast's courses fill with visitors over that long weekend.
November is cooler and wetter, above all at the western end of the coast, around Sotogrande and Gibraltar.
When the sun sets
Spain puts the clocks back on Sunday 25 October 2026. In Marbella the sun sets just after 20:00 on 1 October and at about 19:30 on 24 October. From 25 October it sets at about 18:30, and by the end of November just after 18:00. A 14:00 tee time at the end of November leaves about four hours of daylight.
Getting there
Málaga airport is the main airport for the Costa del Sol. By road it is under an hour from Marbella, a little over an hour from Finca Cortesín and about an hour and a quarter from Sotogrande. Gibraltar airport is closer to Sotogrande, about 25 minutes away, and has flights from London Heathrow, London Gatwick, Manchester, Bristol and Birmingham.
Three courses for an autumn week
Finca Cortesín, Valderrama and La Reserva are a short drive apart, between Casares and Sotogrande. Each club sets its own rules for visitors. We took the rules below from each club's website in September 2026.
Finca Cortesín, Casares
Finca Cortesín is the youngest of the three. Cabell B. Robinson designed it, and the course opened in 2006 on rolling ground between olive trees, with views of the coast. It is a par 72 of 6,736 metres from the back tees, with more than 100 bunkers. In 2017 the club relaid all 18 greens with ultradwarf Bermuda grass, the first course in Spain to do so, and the greens run fast. The club calls the 13th its signature hole: a par 4 with water down the left and across the front of the green.
In 2009 the Volvo World Match Play left Wentworth for the first time and moved to Finca Cortesín. Ross Fisher won that year, Ian Poulter in 2011 and Nicolas Colsaerts in 2012. In September 2023 Finca Cortesín hosted the Solheim Cup, the first played in Spain. The match ended 14–14 and Europe kept the trophy, with Carlota Ciganda winning the point that retained it on the 17th green.
The hotel is a few minutes' walk from the clubhouse, which has a restaurant and a pro shop. Range balls are free, and the Nicklaus Academy runs clinics for groups. Away from the course, the resort has a spa and a beach club on the Bahía de Casares.
The green fee includes a buggy with GPS, and the club takes group bookings through its pro shop.
Real Club Valderrama, Sotogrande
Valderrama opened in 1974 as Sotogrande New and later took the name Las Aves. Jaime Ortiz-Patiño bought it in 1984, and Robert Trent Jones Sr. redesigned his own course for the club that opened as Valderrama in 1985. It is a par 71 of 6,390 metres from the back tees, on gently rolling parkland lined with cork oaks. The 4th, La Cascada, is a par 5 with a waterfall beside the green. The 17th is a par 5 with a lake in front of a green that slopes back towards the water, a hole Seve Ballesteros redesigned before the Ryder Cup.
Valderrama hosted the Volvo Masters, the final event of the European Tour season, 16 times between 1988 and 2008. In 1997 it hosted the Ryder Cup, the first played in continental Europe, with Ballesteros as Europe's captain. Tiger Woods won the WGC-American Express Championship at Valderrama in 1999 and Mike Weir in 2000, and LIV Golf has played there every year since 2023.
There is no hotel at the club. The clubhouse has locker rooms with showers, the Spike Bar serves visitors with a tee time, and the members' restaurant takes bookings from visitor groups in advance. Visitors can use the driving range for 45 minutes before their tee time. The club asks for soft spikes and does not allow phone calls on the course.
Valderrama is a private members' club. Visitors play Monday to Thursday, with tee times between 12:00 and 13:00, and the club publishes a single visitor green fee for 2026, with no seasons. The maximum handicap is 24 for men and 32 for women, and the club can ask for a certificate. Every group plays with a forecaddie, and buggies are for hire when the course conditions allow. A group of sixteen needs four tee times inside that hour.
La Reserva Club, Sotogrande
Cabell B. Robinson also designed La Reserva, which opened in 2003. The course climbs the hillside above Sotogrande and looks down to the Mediterranean. It is a par 72 of 6,721 metres from the back tees, with wide fairways and big changes in height, and water comes into play on several holes. The club rates the 15th as the best hole on the course: a 222-metre par 3 to a three-tier green with water on more than two sides.
La Reserva hosted the NH Collection Open, a European Tour and Challenge Tour event, in 2014, and Ladies European Tour events in 2019 and 2022.
The nearest hotel is SO/ Sotogrande, a five-star hotel about 12 minutes away by car. At the club there is a driving range and an academy run by Manuel Piñero, and the clubhouse restaurant is open from breakfast until the early evening. The club also has tennis and padel courts.
La Reserva is a members' club that takes visitors, and its golf reservations team handles group bookings. The maximum handicap is 28 for men and 34 for women. The club sends players out in fourballs and may pair a smaller group with other players. In wet weather, buggies have to stay on the cart paths.
